An Extraordinary Night

The night was dark and silent;Poems to lift the heart
cold the air, but pregnant!
Shepherds watched their flocks
and gazed into the heavens.

The quiet peace, the stillness
of this usual night
suddenly was shattered
by a brilliant sight.

Shining glory shone around;
an angel stood before:
God’s time had fully come
and Christ the Lord was born!

A multitude of angels joined
praising God on high.
The noise, the light, the glory
resounded through the sky!

Peace on earth, good-will to men:
they had no need to fear,
but to embrace the message
the angels gave so clear.

Glory be to God the Son
who set aside His rights:
humbled as a little babe,
that for man He’d  live and die.

May we like the shepherds
haste to see what came to pass
receive the word, believe the word.
It will fill with joy our hearts.

An ordinary night
now an extraordinary night
for God became incarnate:
the world’s Saviour and its light!

(Luke 2:8-20, Phil.2:6-8)
