Afraid (from book “Comfort When Life Hurts”)

Afraid” is poem 2 in the series “Poems From a Horrible Pit … and Deliverance From It” (a series of 12 poems I am currently sharing).
For Poem 1 see end of post
They tell a story: a  journey with God.
The poems are taken from my book “Comfort When Life Hurts

The second poem is about another emotion one finds when down in a pit – fear. Fear causes hopelessness and the inability to cope. “Afraid” touches on how I was delivered from this.

Afraid

Twisted with knots,
miserable, hurting,
lonely, confused,
afraid of my lot.
Afraid… of what?

Afraid in a hole,
without control,
to others a burden,
my mind blurred and uncertain.
Afraid… of what?

Afraid to be me,
afraid to speak,
afraid to cope,
afraid to hope.
Afraid… of what?

Afraid to trust,
afraid to love,
afraid to give.
Afraid of this?
Afraid of risks?

These things really be
when I look in me,
but they are Satan’s lies
for he wants me to die.

Things are different in Christ;
my heart in Him is fixed.
What I deserve is not how He treats,
but in mercy and love He brings me release.
How great is His grace! How warm His embrace!
Never He leaves, fails or forsakes!
On a safe Rock, He plants my feet.
As His friend, He with me speaks.

I can lift high my head
and draw from Him strength,
courage for the fight,
comfort in the night;
burdens, He makes light
and love promises, writes.

Though I do not understand,
God cares for me and plans.
With threads of wreck and mess,
He weaves a beautiful dress.
So in my mixed up story,
God’s hand is powerfully displayed
as He prepares me for Glory.
How can I be afraid?
